Christian Doppler Laboratory for Structural Strength Control

The Christian Doppler Research Association www.cdg.ac.at promotes the cooperation between science and industry. Specifically, this takes place in research units, so-called Christian Doppler Laboratories (CD-Labs), which are established at universities for a fixed term of maximum seven years.

The Christian Doppler Laboratory for Structural Strength Control of Lightweight Constructions was established from May 1st, 2014 to 31.12.2021 at the Institute for Structural Lightweight Design of the Johannes Kepler University Linz. The objective of the CD-Lab was

  • the development of holistic and standardized procedures
  • to monitor and assure (i.e. control)
  • the load carrying capability (i.e. strength and stiffness) of damage tolerant lightweight structures

during the operation, on-line and over the lifetime of the structures. For this holistic approach the term Structural Strength Control (SSC) is introduced, wherein Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is an important, but only one of several research topics.
